Default Richmond, VA to Yellowstone and Back -- Camping!

We're planning a 5-week camping odyssey this summer from Virginia to Ft. Collins, Co, then on to the Tetons and Yellowstone, and back home via the Badlands and Mt. Rushmore (with a detour to New Hampshire to see family).

We (two adults and two children) will be in a van pulling a pop-up trailer and would appreciate any suggestions regarding route, campsites, things to see, things to miss, etc.

So far we've got the following loose plan:

Day 1: to Camp Creek, West Virginia

Day 2: To Lexington, KY: Kentucky Horse Park Campground

    Day 3: to St. Louis

Day 5: to Wilson State Park, Sylvan Grove, KS

    About 3 hours, 15 minutes

    Day 6: to Goodland, KS

    3 hours 26 minutes

Day 7: to Ft. Collins, CO

Days 8-11: Ft. Collins with friends

    Days 12-13: to Jackson, WY

Days 14-16: Grand Tetons National Park

Days 17-20: Yellowstone (Bridge Bay Campground)

Days 21-28: Devil's Tower, Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, then to Keene, NH

    Days 29-32: to Keene, NH

    Days 33-35: In Keene, NH

    Days 35-37: Home to VIrginia

    Default So What's Your Question?

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!\

So far, all you've done is lay out the barest bones of an itinerary and route. There's nothing wrong with what you've got so far, but what sort of help were you looking for? There are certainly things to do in each state and along each major highway, but there is no generic list of must see's. That depends entirely on you and you've told us nothing about what it is you want out of this trip.

    Hi--
As I mention above, I'm hoping people might share their ideas/opinions on routes, campsites, things to see and things to miss :). We've never taken on a road trip like this one, and it seems like there's a lot of wisdom and experience among the members of this forum that I'd love to tap into. Thanks in advance to anyone who has any suggestions.

Well, a few very general comments would be these - if you have a choice between a commercial campground and a state park, go for the park. You will almost always save money. Commercial campgrounds are getting almost as expensive as budget motel rooms. I would also try to keep the point-to-point driving down to about 500 miles or so a day on Interstates, less on secondary roads. If you want to camp in national parks or near major tourist attractions, reservations are generally essential.
