Bakersfield is the halfway point and has a large selection of hotels. However, it's a city, with its good and bad areas. Barstow may be a more fun place to stay, it's a smaller town and has a lot of Route 66 history. Figure about 2 hours from Bakersfield to Barstow, with very little of anything between them.
You should not be going to Barstow!
Bakersfield is a much better choice -- it's a large city now -- but if you're going to Death Valley from Bakersfield, you can stay in Lake Isabella or Tehachapi or Ridgecrest -- there's no reason whatsoever to go all the way to Barstow -- you'll be missing one of the best parts of the Death Valley route!

And for the record, I just wanted to clarify this a little. There are about a dozen towns and two significant cities between Bakersfield and Barstow. In fact, there's only about a 26 mile space where there is not rural or urban driving between these two cities -- so if you were going to bypass the preferred route into Death Valley (US-395 and CA-190) you'd have quite literally hundreds of lodging choices between these two points.GLC: Figure about 2 hours from Bakersfield to Barstow, with very little of anything between them.

Oops, sorry about that - I don't have a clue where my head was at! I must have been lockwired to Las Vegas, not Death Valley.
Bakersfield is the correct answer for having the largest choice of hotels around the halfway point.
