    Here's another picture to ponder.

    1) Where is this?
    2) What river is being protected?

    Default the mighty mississippi?

I haven't stopped there in many years, but that looks like it could be Fort Snelling in St. Paul, MN.

Although it is a Fort, it is not Fort Snelling.
Here's another clue. The river is not named for a state.

    Default On the James River?

The location could be Fort Darling, on Drewry's Bluff, just downstream of Richmond, VA.

The Confederates had large rifled Parrots at Fort Darling, however, so it it's Darling, those aren't the main batteries.

It is not Fort Darling on the James River, but it was the site of a major civil war conflict in 1862. Here is another picture.

Is this Montreal? And perhaps Gen is standing on a bridge girder?

Maybe on the Jacques Cartier Bridge?

    Default Homework is due

Reckon I've got some homework to do, then.

If it's not Fort Darling or the James River, perhaps it's Fort Donelson, TN, on the Cumberland River, lost by the Confederates in major action in early 1862.

A dinner date with clients calls. Homework later..........

    Default a second

Fort Donelson was going to be my next guess as well. In fact, after doing a little bit of homework, that seems like the perfect fit.

You both are correct. It is Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River near Dover, Tennessee, just south of the Land Between The Lakes.

It's an American City which features a lot of grain elevators.
