Exploring New England in the fall

My friend and I are planning a visit to New England.
We are thinking of flying into Boston, renting a car
and visiting Massachussetts, Vermont, New Hampshire
and Maine. We love nature, camping and being on the
road. We are planning a 10 day trip probably
from Sept 24 - Oct 4.

Any suggestions on what route to take, what places
to visit. I apologize if similiar things have been
posted. I did try searching and would love links
to old forum messages.
