"Where in North America?" --- Section III

Maybe it was a little obscure. This store was used as the setting for Grace’s Diner in the Marilyn Monroe film “Bus Stop” – where she and Don Murray were snowed in.

Hope this is a more reasonable challenge - what river is this?

... viewed from Hwy 30, the Oregon side Can't recall the precise location though, but have swapped the photo in the quote above in case it makes it clearer what's mountain and what's cloud. Someone else's turn I think.

Sorry I can't be more precise but I was heading west towards Astoria on the Columbia River Highway and, if memory serves, this was towards the end of the drive. I've just "driven" the relevant section of Googlemaps but unable to come up with anything.

I used to be a field support person for a mainframe software company; my territory covered most of the West. I had some doozy locations to get to: including Ilwaco WA (where a telephone company used to be before relocating to Vancouver WA).

Only reasonable way to get there was to fly to PDX, rent a car, and drive for 2-3 hours to the Long Beach peninsula. Would alternate between the OR and WA side to keep things different.

I guess the view on those drives still lurks in the back of my brain somewhere.

I've had occasion to drive both sides of the Columbia gorge at least a dozen times in the last 25 years or so. In a previous life, I was a property manager for apartment properties in the Tri-Cities area of Washington and would sometimes drive the gorge roads, in lieu of flying out of Pasco. But I've only driven to Astoria a couple of times and, as think about it, there are some sightlines from the river that would show those mountains -- A pretty amazing view in any case!

This was killing me, so I poked around Google Earth and it looks like the location is:

46 degrees 11 minutes 46 seconds North +/-
145 degrees 45 minutes 23 seconds West +/-

The boat is even there!

It's the little cove just before Astoria. Shot taken almost due North.

Google maps shows it as "Tongue Point Village"

Bumping this photo back to the fore.... and the first hint.... It is an old Army fort somewhere in the west.....

Reminds me of some of the landscape in southern AZ, as in maybe the Chiricahua area.
