New York-Niagara-Toronto round trip

We are planning a 4 day round trip in August from New York to Toronto with a stop at Niagara Falls. We would like to break the journey from New York to Niagara approximately halfway with a stop to see something interesting or picturesque with overnight accomodation nearby. Any suggestions? Also we would like to again break up the return journey with an interesting but different stop approx halfway between Toronto and New York. Appreciate any suggestions or recomendations as we are from UK and would like to see more of the USA and its natural beauty. Thank you
