  1. Default 2 Aussies travel across US in Summer 2008

    Hey,

My boyfriend and I are planning a road trip for June and July 2008.
We have about 3-4 weeks to do this in.

Just need some suggestions on what would be a good route to cover.
We have been to the US before but would love to go to, Las Vages, Grand Canyon, New York and possibly Florida.
The other destinations in between are what we are looking for suggestions on.

    Any help would be great!

Default Not a Lot of Time, But

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

Three to four weeks sounds like a lot until you actually start adding up the miles and planning the stops, especially since it seems to include stays in Las Vegas and New York. However, if you can forego Florida and keep up a good, steady pace in your travels, you can see quite a bit of the U.S. in 6000 miles (or 2000 miles a week for three weeks). My suggested route would go something like this. From the Grand Canyon head west on I-40, seeing Petrified Forest National Park and Petroglyph National Monument on the way to Oklahoma City, then follow I-44 up to St. Louis, another city worth visiting. I-70 would then take you to Washington, DC and I-95 up to New York. From New York head back down I-95 to Wilmington, DE and then take US-13 down the Delmarva Peninsula, crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel to Virginia Beach. Next, in lieu of going to Florida, head down to Kitty Hawk, NC and use NC-12 to see some great beaches along the Outer Banks crossing back to the mainland on the Ocracoke - Cedar Island Ferry. From here head on over to Raleigh and use I-40 through the Appalachian Mountains with a stop at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. When you get to Nashville, for something completely different, take the Natchez Trace Parkway down to Vicksburg. Then it's west on I-20 through Dallas and Abilene, with more natural attractions at Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands before finishing your trip by heading up through Arizona back to Las Vegas. As I say, three weeks is not a lot of time to do all that, but if that's what you're after, it is possible.

Would you drive Broome-Perth-Sydney and to Cairns in 3-4 weeks? Also 6000 miles with detours.
You're packing too much imo. Driving from San Francisco (or Los Angeles) to New York can be done in 3-4 weeks but even then you're missing tons of remarkable sights. Nevertheless a cross country drive is everybodies dream. So please make up your mind first re starting and final location. My advice: Start Los Angeles re Las Vegas and GCNP and leave from New York. Or start Las Vegas. (Or in reverse of course)
