New York to California

Hi road trippers...

We're new to this site and would appreciate your help! We're planning the following route from NYC to LA and would love to hear your advice & thoughts. Time is not an issue although finances are - we have brilliant camping gear, however a cheap hotel would be nice every now and then. The Route:
NYC to Niagara Falls to Chicago to Denver/Colorado Springs to Grand Canyon to Las vegas to LA.

Our main issue is the Chicago to Denver trip - what is there to see/do on the way?

As it happens, we are in the midst of compiling a list of A to Z things to do in each of the 50 states (and 10 Provinces and 31 Mexican states). Two that are finished and will thus give you a number of ideas for your drive between Chicago and Denver are Iowa and Nebraska.

If you're doing I-80, then it is easy to ignore Nebraska. Depending on time of year, the drive through the Sand Hills can be one long scenic drive.
