2 Weeks around the Deep South

Hi everyone, my girlfriend and I are planning a trip around the South this September. We are flying in and out of Atlanta and want to include New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville and Smoky Mountains.

Any tips or advice on the best route/things to avoid/places off the beaten track etc?

Hi Boog, welcome to the site. Where are you travelling from?

I did a trip to Atlanta, Talladega, Smoky Mountains, Charlotte and Myrtle Beach last year and I am in the process of planning a trip at the moment to include Houston, Dallas, Memphis, Birmingham, Talladega and New Orleans. Might be worth taking a couple of minutes to read the advice the people on these forums gave me?

Be sure to visit the Martin Luther King birthplace in Atlanta. I did it last year and it's fascinating. It really deserved more than the spare hour I gave it, so I'm planning to visit the motel in Memphis where he was killed when I return in April.

Don't know how your dates will work out, you said September, but if you are in town the first weekend in October, have a look at the UAW-Ford 500 at Talladega. Even if you've never been to a motor race in your life, it's one amazing spectacle, and well worth a visit!

And, thanks Craig for the pointers to some previous threads on the area. As you can see from the fact that the software that chooses Similar Threads (see at bottom) chose discussions of the Southwest and South Dakota, it's far from perfect. A few of the places along your general route that I've found rewarding include FDR's Little White House in Warm Springs, GA; Montgomery and Selma, AL for their Civil Rights History; Old Cahawba outside of Selma; the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway; Baton Rouge, particularly the State Capitol for its views of the Mississippi and Huey Long history; US-61, the Blues Highway, up to Memphis; in Vicksburg, both the town and the battlefield; either Shiloh or Nashville as you cross Tennessee; and finally, if you're really into twisty mountain roads, the 'Tail of the Dragon', US-129 through Deal's Gap between Tennessee and North Carolina south of the Smoky Mountains - 318 turns in 11 miles and very popular with motorcyclists.
