buying cars in USA

Hello all,

we are 3 students from Slovenia(Europe). We are making a 30day roadtrip across USA in july 2007 - west to east coast. We have figured out almost every detail of the trip except the transport. First we were thinking of renting a car when we arrive but that is too expensive so we want to buy a car in San Francisco instead and then sell it back in New York. What we don't know is if we (turists) can buy a car in USA in the first place. 2nd, if we can buy a car can we register it if we don't have permenant address where we are staying? Is the registration possible for a month or for the whole year only? Can anyone points us to some usefull websites regarding this issue?

Sounds like a grand adventure! Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum! There has been lots of posts on this subject -- if you use the search function and look for posts about renting, purchasing cars you will find all sorts of ideas. Here is one those posts.

Well, that is the correct order -- west-coast cars are worth more on re-sale than those who have been living in areas that routinely salt highways.

Can anyone points us to some usefull websites regarding this issue?

There are companies that will sell you a car upon arrival and then guarantee to buy it back at the end of the trip. Here is some information about one of them.
