Jersey City, NJ to West Chapel, FL 1st Week of December

My wife has volunteered to drive her sister from Jersey City, NJ to Wesley Chapel, Florida during the first week of December. I'm not that familiar with the area and won't be with her. Based on a Google Map search between the two locations I guess the shortest path is via I-95. They plan on stopping before the nightfall staying at a hotel and not making any night drives. Would appreciate any tips from folks who frequent this part of the country or have made this trek before around this time.

Any preferred areas to stop along the way, safe and close to the freeway.

The LAST thing you want to do is take I-95 from where you are to Richmond VA. The traffic is just awful. I would take a route approximately 100 miles longer. I would take I-78 to I-81 to I-77 to I-26 to I-95. At Jacksonville, take I-295 to I-10 to US-301 to Ocala to I-75.

This is 1200 miles and may be too much for even 2 days, I'd allow 3 days for the trip and keep it relaxed. 2.5 days would put overnights around Roanoke and Savannah.

I would "second" the route suggested by glc. That 95 is the WORST road for traffic that I have ever seen, and I regularly drive in Los Angeles! Stay away from 95!
