2 week road trip Denver, Salt Lake City, Yellowstone, Rapid City

Dear Community,

We have planned a 2 week road trip following the below route, and were looking for any suggestions for things to see and do along the route or at each stop-over, or places we should not miss. Also any tips specific to where we are going would be very handy, as this is our 1st time driving in America. We have accommodation sorted but that is it so far, and are travelling the 2nd week in May.

Denver - 1 night
Grand Junction - 1 night
Moab - 1 night
Salt Lake City - 2 nights
Yellowstone - 2 nights
Jackson - 2 nights
Cody - 1 night
Sheridan - 1 night
Rapid City - 2 nights
Cheyenne - 1 night
Back to Denver

I see a nice slow, planned trip here, a good thing. I do wonder what you have planned for some of those nights, but that's okay.

One red flag, though, is

Yellowstone - 2 nights
Jackson - 2 nights

Please ensure that Yellowstone roads are all the way open before attempting to proceed. Hopefully by the 2nd week of May, the road between Mammoth Hot Springs and the south entrance to Yellowstone will be open. However, there is always the chance that it will not be. This link will get you to the road openings/closures page for Yellowstone. While Yellowstone officially never closes, the roads certainly do for regular traffic, and are only open to snowmobiles at certain times of the winter months.
