  1. Default South Florida to Salt Lake City

    Hi Everyone,

Looking for some advice on a road trip that I am doing next month, here are the details:

We are planning on leaving Sunday morning from Boca Raton, FL and staying in Nashville, TN for the night. Next day we would be driving to and staying the night in Lincoln, NE. The last day we will be arriving in SLC at around 11pm.

***Our goal is to get to Utah as quick as possible, that is where we will be for two weeks***

We are two recently released military guys and taking a few months vacation. I would like to get some thoughts/input from you more experienced "road trippers".

I have a route drawn up on furkot.com it includes all of our stops and routes.

    Thanks,

    Al

Default Much faster than safely possible

    Welcome to the RTA Forum!

I'm sorry, but the plan you've laid out is beyond dangerous. Boca to Nashville is nearly 900 miles. Despite what online mapping programs might tell you, that is about 16 hours real world driving time and about 50 percent farther than professional drivers are allow to drive in a day under safety laws. Not only is that extremely dangerous, following it up with another 750 mile drive the following day is homicidally dangerous. Your odds of being involved in a crash will increase about 12 fold with this plan.

You really need to go back to the drawing board and plan to stop every 550-600 miles. Boca to SLC is a 2500 mile drive and you need a minimum of 5 days to safely complete this drive.

    Default Why the rush ?

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

You really need a rethink as your plan really is dangerous as it is, fatigue is killer when you are driving beyond the limits and you are well beyond them. Professional drivers are restricted by law as to how far they can safely travel and how many hours they can stay on the road and a 'perfect day' with no delays would see you manage 600 miles over 10 to 11 hours. Why put you and everyone you share the road with at risk while you have enough time to make the journey safely and more relaxed. You need to average your stops out to 550-600 miles per day and make it a trip of 4 overnight stops.

  4. Default Thanks for the replies

Thanks for the input I am glad I asked before doing this. Just wanted to clarify, this is too much despite the fact that there are two drivers?

Having two drivers does very little to change how far you can safely travel in a day. Just sitting in a moving car is tiring, and there is no way to get any real rest in that position. Again, for comparison sake, for professionals, anytime spent sitting in a passenger seat counts exactly the same as time behind the wheel.
