  1. Default Any help for a family trip from Las Vegas, NV to Stateline, NV/ South Tahoe, CA

Hi, I intend to travel with my family from Las Vegas, NV to Stateline, NV/ South Tahoe, CA in a couple of weeks.
I´ve been searching for some information online about this kind of road trip during winter.
My main concern is if it´s safe, almost 8h driving considering actual road conditions.
Is the best option from Las Vegas take:
    = US 95 N to Hawthorne, then
= ALT 95 N to Silver Springs, then
= US 50 to Carson City, and continuing, get Stateline, NV.?

The RTA Map Wizard suggests another route, taking NV 208W + US395N +NV207 W.

Are chains or snow tires chains required/ mandatory on this road?
Any information you can send me will be really helpful :-)
    Thanks in advance, Claudia

Default A little bit too early.

Hi Claudia, and Welcome to the Great American Roadtrip Forum.

It is far too early for anyone to tell you what the road conditions will be like in a couple of weeks time. By far the best thing you could do right now is to familiarise yourself with the route options. Good maps are really useful here.

Closer to your departure time, watch the weather forecasts. Only then will you know where a storm could possibly hit. The safest way for a winter road trip is to take the most direct shortest route which indicates clear weather. Be sure to have some time up your sleeve, should you be caught out by an unexpected turn of weather, so that you can suit it out. For road conditions at that time go to safetravelusa.com for your State.

I would not plan on taking NV-207, it's currently closed due to a sinkhole.

I'd plan on taking US-95 all the way to Fallon, then US-50. Those are major well maintained roads. Chains or snow tires may be required, but if the weather is bad, there really is no better way to get to Tahoe than US-50.
