Sarasota to Minneapolis - Avoiding Atlanta but stopping at Andersonville, GA

Would like to travel back from Sarasota to Minneapolis in our Roadtrek, but avoid Atlanta and Nashville this time. I would also very much like to visit Andersonville and see the memorial there, as I have a great great uncle buried there. I'm looking at going through Alabama as an alternative. Anyone have some tips? We have four days to travel.

Andersonville is a very interesting stop, I think you'll enjoy it.

Avoiding Atlanta is quite easy - I'd head to Alabama like you were suggesting. First, work your way to Columbus, GA then take US-80 to Tuskegee (possibly stopping at the Tuskegee Airmen historic site), and take I-85 (south!) to Montgomery. From there you can use I-65 North.

If you'd like to skip Nashville, then your best bet would be to go through Memphis - using I-22, then continue north through St. Louis and Cedar Rapids.

Thanks for the response! I am a genealogy nerd, so have long wanted to see Andersonville and get photos of my relatives buried there...and the Airmen Historic site would thrill my hubby - great suggestion. And skipping Nashville would be a plus as well.

BTW, if you do end up going through Cedar Rapids - watch your speed very closely on I-380. It's one of the only places in the country where there are speed cameras installed on the Interstate - and it is a huge revenue generator for the city.
