  1. Default Early March trip to Kitty Hawk, Virginia Beach area

We have spring break VERY early..March 5-13. Considering a trip from Springfield, MO to Kitty Hawk area. Have a friend from Virginia Beach that will meet up with us. It is a long way from here. What is the weather like this time of year? Best route? Should we punt and go elsewhere? We have a time share to use and picked this area due to vacancy and it's near our friend. I''m having second thoughts because it's so far and wondering if weather will be worth it. Another option would be meet half way somewhere in Tennessee or Asheville, NC.
I am new on here. Anyway, we love BBQ, Blues, flea markets, antiques, history, the beach. Open to suggestions about dates/weather/routes/etc. THANKS in advance!!

    Welcome to RTA!

Historical early March weather in Kitty Hawk is highs in the upper 50's, lows in the low 40's.

Fastest route will take 2 full days on the road, is as follows:

US-60 out of SGF to Sikeston, I-57 to Exit 1 in IL, US-51 through Cairo, upon leaving Cairo turn left (staying on US-51) to cross the Ohio River, stay on US-51 into Wickliffe, turn right at the T-intersection (staying on US-51), turn left on Court St. (KY-121), go a few blocks, bear left at the Y-intersection onto KY-286, merge onto US-62 toward Paducah, get on I-24 to Nashville, take the TN-155 Briley Pkwy bypass to I-40. Take I-540 around Raleigh to US-64 to the beach.

If you are not used to driving long distances, I'd allow a 3rd day. Lodging should not be an issue, there will be a good selection of hotels and motels along the entire route except between SGF and Sikeston. You may want to spend some time in Nashville for some BBQ and music.

Note - if the rivers are flooding, US-51 and the Ohio River bridge are likely to be closed. You will have to stay on I-57 to Exit 30 and take IL-146 to I-24.

Have you personally spent time in Kitty Hawk/Duck area? I've read rather bad reviews of the Wyndham time shares available and it makes me want to skip it altogether.

There should be plenty of rooms available in March, still very much the off-season. Sometimes you can even pick up a beach cottage/condo on-sale and for less than a week. If you are driving on US 64 into the Outer Banks staying in Nags Head or South Nags Head is a good option.

Water and weather is typically a little warmer south of Buxton, in the Frisco area, albeit it will still be cool. Frisco benefits from the Gulf Stream whereas the northern Outer Banks does not.
