Gary Flanagan has been a member of RoadTrip America for 10 years. He has documented several cross country "speed run" trips over the years. He is about to undertake a new trip. 50 states in one week. Here is the text of an e-memo I received earlier this week:
My name is Gary Flanagan, but hopefully that will not be important. I would prefer you just say Ugrant. Why? Because U are going to help me Grant $50 to random locations or people in all 50 states. In one week.
During my previous three trips to all 50 states I have come across numerous people that could have benefitted from a simple exchange of money to help them eat, clothe or shelter themselves. I was able to help some with a few dollars from my pocket here and there.
I would like to contribute more and consistently with a plan that allows others to help as well. You may not be able to travel to all 50 states efficently in a week, but I can and I have. You can enjoy a virtual ride and help spread at least one Ugrant in each state across this fine land we live in.
Each Ugrant will be in a plain white envelope with a simple message on the outside. Congratulations, you have found a Ugrant. Inside will be a simple note that invites the finder to use the enclosed $50 bill for needed food , clothes or shelter. If not needed, please pass on to someone else that could use it.
My goal is to start on October 24th (Make a difference day) in Vermont and finish in less than a week in Hawaii. I am expensing the cost of the trip myself and will transfer all that is donated into Ugrants that will be given away.
Your support will power me in my journey to help others who just need a little monetary boost to their day. Together, we can accomplish something that can truly make a difference across this country.
