These posts were seven years apart! I agree that the tour is worth doing (although parking a giant rented SUV in the multi-story car park was challenging) but that's an impressive level of dedication to the cause of promoting the place :)

You have planned very well and I just want to add some places that are must see like, Alcatraz Island, Muir woods, red wood park in SF bay area. These are amazing sights you should not miss. Have a great time.

Google just added a new feature that I really like: You can click on any point on your route, and manually drag your path onto another road. So for example, if you are going to go from Denver to San Francisco, it will come up with a route along I-80, but you could pull your route down and get the mileage estimate for using US-50 instead.

That is a handy feature, although it's not a new one. Googlemaps has had the drag and drop feature for at least 5, if not 10, years now. In fact, I'd say that "new" Googlemaps, as in the version rolled out in early 2015, makes the feature much more difficult to use, as you can no longer easily remove the waypoint(s) just by right clicking on them. The day that Google disabled "classic" google maps was a very disappointing day for me, and I'm still looking for an online program that was as user friendly as google used to be.

Google is the first, as far as I can recall, to allow the drag/drop feature, but the major competitors like Mapquest and Bing copied it years ago and also have it.

We had the drag and drop feature on the RTA Custom Mapping program as well, but it caused way too many problems with database management and therefore it is currently not enabled.

Creating a new route on the RTA program takes less than a minute on most routes and that provides the different mileage option as well.

Hi Everyone !

Im glad I've found you, Im just hoping its not too late. My husband and I will be arriving in San Francisco (from Wales, in the UK) in just under 2 weeks to celebrate his 40th birthday. We have a convertible car on hire and already have an itinerary, with hotels booked en-route. We are now getting to the nitty gritty of the planning stages and just wondered if anyone out there had any tips/suggestions for driving the following route.

San Francisco to Monterey; Monterey to Yosemite; Yosemite to Death Valley; Death Valley to Las Vegas; Las Vegas to Grand Canyon (South Rim); Grand Canyon to Lake Havasu; Lake Havasu to Los Angeles.

Any driving suggestions or must see attractions would be greatly appreciated.

I’m fairly new here so don’t know all the ropes, but is there a reason such an old post has a sticky? What gives a sticky to some posts as I do see a lot of very old ones. Granted they are interesting and still can give info but probably no longer needs help either. Thanks.
