Custer to Yellowstone would be a pretty long day on the road, especially while towing. It would depend a bit on where in Yellowstone you're targeting, and which route you're looking at to get there.

Doing it in one day would mean you wouldn't really have time to stop at any of the attractions in the Western Black Hills.

In general, I'd probably try to break the drive somewhere along the way.

Thank you all so much for the great advice. Ok so I will try and break up that trip. We will be in no hurry and I would rather enjoy the trip than cram in the miles, pretty sure my kids would agree! Ha!

  3. Default What 5 items or bits of wisdom would you give to a new RVing family

Assuming there is more than one thing you couldn't leave home without. What should I not leave home without (items or advice)... Go!

PS- kids and dog and husband will be going :)

A road atlas and/or maps are the most essential items, and know how to use them. Don't leave home without them. Know how to use your rig. Bring a pair of rubber gloves for handling the sewer hookups, and a spray bottle full of bleach/water to clean off the water spigot before you hook your water to the campground's water hookup. If hooked up to a sewer hookup, leave the black water tank valve CLOSED until just before you want to disconnect. Then open the valve and empty your tank. (This will save the possibility of a major jam. We had to learn this one the hard way.)

The national forest campgrounds rarely have hookups. Most of them have pit toilets, and water spigots every few feet. Only a few campgrounds in state parks and national parks have them, either, though Yellowstone has Fishing Bridge RV Park (if you're lucky enough to land a spot there). If you want full hookups, all of the RV parks in Sturgis have them. You just have to pay more for the site, which makes sense, because somebody had to bring that power, water and sewer in and it wasn't free.

Donna gave you a great start.

Prescriptions, camera, laptop computer, camping reservations and maps are my most important items! Almost everything else can be purchased on the road.

I have a camping list of over 300 items but I'm not going to post everything on it...LOL! Here are a few items I always like to bring, books to read, sun visor hat, umbrella, rain jacket, river shoes (old shoes I don't mind getting wet), my misty-mate for hiking in the desert, our personal phone book in case we have to call a neighbor or relative, backpacks that have water bottle holders, and my newest favorite item....my Contigo stainless steel water mug that keeps liquids cold for 12 hours or hot for 5 hours.

Since you began this thread asking about mountain driving you might be interested in getting the Mountain Directory West edition. http://www.mountaindirectory.com/westmap.html
