(right below Shennadoah Nat'l Park--a great & scenic place to visit in itself) you can pick up Skyline Drive south which leads into the Blue Ridge Parkway, both of which are among the most scenic routes in the USA. Not only are these beautiful and well-maintained roads by the NPS, commercial traffic is not allowed(no trucks). That being said, while this road follows a general sothwest direction it is intended to be enjoyed slowly. The speed limit most of the time is 45mph and often with the winding, scenic moutainous nature of the drive this speed cannot be maintaind for long. A quicker route to use while avoiding I-81 is to take US 11 south through the valley, through Staunton, Lexington, Roanoke, Salem & then pick-up he BR Parkway down near the NC state line. This will lead directly to Asheville and a beautiful drive.
