I would reverse the direction of the trip so you are driving south down the coast. That way the scenic pullouts will be on your side of the road.

You could include Yosemite on that list, in fact I highly recommend you do ! The high ground can close to traffic this time of year, but it can also stay open late depending on when the winter storms come. Either way Yosemite valley is beautiful and worth the visit alone. With the time you have available you should also look at including other areas, Zion and Bryce canyon in Southern Utah and Page AZ with Lake Powell, Antelope canyon, Horse shoe bend etc nearby and just southeast of ther, Monument Valley.
If you reverse the trip as suggested above you will have the Ocean on your side of the road heading south down the coast. Such a loop would look something like this; LA >GC >Monument valley > Page AZ > Bryce canyon > Zion NP > LV > Death valley > Lake Tahoe/Yosemite > SF > LA with a night or 2 to enjoy the coast. Many options available to you and that is just an idea of how one might work.
Hi again,
so the trip is upcoming next week and we kind of got stuck in our planing and i hope maybe one of you can help.
From 10/06 - 10/29 we will do a california roundtrip starting in LA:
LA - SDiego - Palm Springs - Las Vegas and from there we wanted to go to Grand Canyon.
I researched and learned that there is a north and a south rim at grand canyon. The north rim will be open in november on the days when snow has not occured till then.
Do you have any recommodations on grand canyon epsacially which rim to visit?
And from there we wanted to go to Monument Valley but it's difficult for me to figure out a route with goolge maps, can one of you help? i was plannig Las Vegas - Grand Canyon - Monument Valley - Mojave/ Death Valley - Yosemite - SFrancisco and from there down on route 1 back to LA
Thanks a lot
Sebastian
sorry dave i didn't read over your post again. basicly evrything i asked is in there.
what remains: is it for a 23 day trip a bad idea to go to the north rim ?
Surely you have not been doing all this planning within the confines of a computer screen. Your trip is far too extensive to get the overall picture on a little screen. What you need are good maps.
Better get yourself a good set of maps or a Rand McNally road atlas on your arrival. do not be tempted to rely solely on your electronics. Many have done so at their peril.
Be sure to make paper maps your first tool for navigating. use the electronics as a back up and to find specific addresses.
Lifey
thanks lifey. we will definetly do that. Ok the schedule would look something like that:
11/06 Los Angeles
11/07 San Diego
11/8 Palm Springs (Joshua Tree)
11/9 Palm Springs (Salton Sea)
11/10 Grand Canyon
11/11 Page AZ
11/12 Bryce Canyon
11/13 Zion NP
11/14 Zion NP
11/15 LV
11/16 LV
11/17 Yosemite
11/18 Yosemite
11/19 Yosemite
11/20 Lake Taho
11/21 Lake Taho
11/22 San Francisco
11/23 San Francisco
11/24 Santa Barbara
11/25 Santa Barbara
11/26
11/27 Los Angeles
11/28 Santa Ana
I thought 14-16 days for the part from LA to San Francisco and about a week to drive down to LA again. What are the thoughts from the roadtrip-veterans on that?
Thanks a lot for your help again, it's incredible how helpfull you guys are
Looks good. Note that if you want to do the North Rim, US-89 is closed from the US-89/Alt-89 junction to Page. There is a bypass (US-89T) which runs from just north of the US-160 junction to Page. This makes it difficult to get from Page to the north rim without a significant detour.
Yep your looking good ! If the 26th is a 'spare day' then I would consider stopping a night between SF and SB to enjoy a little more time down the very scenic coastal highway. Monterey or Cambria areas would work. I would also consider getting a bit closer to the GC on the 9th just to allow a little more time there.
