This happened to me, only yesterday. Speaking with a Deputy Sheriff whose responsibility it is to police the area. He is absolutely passionate about the Chiricahua National Monument. It was a bit off my route, and I thanked him, but silently decided to ignore his advice and continue on my planned route.....
That was until I came to the turn off to the park. Somehow something inside of me told me to turn. The distance to the park was worth every bit of the amazing scenes upon which I chanced. Furthermore, the rangers in the visitor centre were so incredibly helpful and full of suggestions of things I could enjoy without having to hike.
I ended up spending the night in the campground, rather than where I had planned to go. A late arrival was the only other party there. We had a wonderful evening, these three young folk from Ottowa, surrounded by some of the magnificent rock formations and shaded by magnificent trees.
To top it all off, during the summer this park is free, as is camping.... complete with flushing toilets.
Highly recommended.
