  1. Default New York to Miami - September October

    Hi Guys,

So my boyfriend and I are from Australia.
We're planning on flying to New York spending a few days there and then driving down to Miami.
I've researched it a bit but wanted to get some opinions of the best places to stop along the way.
The places with the best motels for over night etc.
We have 14 days and are spending a few in New York, want to detour to Orlando and then spend a few days in Miami.

Any ideas or opinions are appreciated :)

    Default The Basic Options

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

There are three basic routes you could take from New York City to Miami. You could follow the main Interstate (motorway) I-95, but other than offering the fastest route, it doesn't have as much to offer as the other two: following the Atlantic Coast or Appalachian Mountains. There are, of course, numerous variations on those three basic options. So have a look at them and let us know which appeals to you and why, and we can probably offer some more attractions specifically suited to your tastes.

As far as where to stop each night, you will be hard pressed to find an area between New York and Miami where you won't have multiple motel choices available to you, from low cost chains (such as Motel 6, Super 8, Red Roof Inns and others), to medium priced locations (such as Quality Inns, Comfort Inns, La Quinta Inns and others), to more up-scale properties (such as Hilton Hotels and various resort hotels). Again, once we know what you're looking for we can be of more help, but generally if you find a motel you like ask the for a list of their other locations. While each motel may be individually owned and operated, the franchise will hold them to certain standards.

Provided you have the time, I'd suggest you consider the combination of the Shenandoah National Park followed by the Blue Ridge Parkway, and then perhaps the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. That's a magnificently pleasant, interesting and scenic ride of over 500 miles - but definitely not a fast road and even slower if you stop for the overlooks, pioneer cabins, etc. Of course, you could always do some of it. There's more information about the parks and the parkway on the US National Park Service web site http://www.nps.gov

Default There's more to Florida than Orlando and Miami.

Don't overlook some of the great attractions in Florida, besides Orlando and Miami. In Orlando you will be a stone's throw from the Kennedy Space Centre at Cape Canaveral. From Miami it is a lovely day trip to the Everglades NP. Take a boat ride from Flamingo, or one of the air boat rides available outside the national park. Not to be overlooked is the magnificent drive on the Overseas Highway to Key West. Here too there are many attractions along the way. Two that stand out for me are the Wildlife Bird Centre and the endangered Key Deer on Big Pine and No Name Keys. These are the smallest of all the deer species.

    Enjoy your trip.
