Campgrounds in Moab UT vicinity

First time poster here ...

Any recommendations for campgrounds in the Moab/Canyonlands vicinity? We'll be out there the first two weeks of May ...

Any places to avoid?

The Moab area is fantastic for camping with no shortage of great options. What's your setup, tent, rv, other?

I really enjoyed the campground within Island in the Sky at Canyonlands. It is a great location, just a short walk from some great overlooks. It is however very rustic, with only a pit toilet and no running water. I was able to get a site there without a reservation, but it is small with only about 10 sites and it filled up by the end of the day.

The campground in Arches is very popular, but you'd likely need to make reservations early, as it fills up.

Dead Horse Point State Park is another popular choice overlooking canyonlands, and unlike many others in the area, it does have services like showers and running water.

There are also tons of BLM sites all over the area. Nearly all of them are first-come, first-served and are very rustic with no water. Here's a great map with all the choices in the area.

As mentioned, Devils Garden in Arches is popular and you would be advised to check availability and book if it appeals to you. Located deep into Arches NP, it's a great spot for hiking and driving around the park from and has a lovely 'feel' about the place. You might want to move around during your 2 weeks and use different bases.

Are you planning on sight seeing on the way in or out of the area and how far are you planning on wandering "in the vicinity" ? Lot's of great places around and about, especially with a couple of weeks to spare.

Back in 2012, we passed all of those National Forest campgrounds that were along UT-128, like Upper Big Bend, Big Bend, Oak Grove, and GranStaff. We looked into some of them and said to each other, those were campsites we'd LOVE if we were still tenting! But most of them are nothing more than pit toilets and maybe a water faucet to get water (U-haul!). We weren't as enamored with the ones we saw on the way to Dead Horse Point. We loved the views from the UT-128 better, that's why!

We really don't have a set plan for our visit to the area ... we'll probably just wing it as we go along!
