  1. Default New England from CT to ME

My husband and I will be celebrating our 30th anniversary with a trip to New England. We will fly into Hartford, CT, rent a car, and drive to Maine....hopefully seeing some wonderful sights and visiting new places. I want to go to Mystic, CT. Also, I want to stay in a Vermont B&B and visit Bar Harbor, ME. Any other suggestions, we will have 5 days on the road.

Default Little Time, But a Small Area

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

New England is actually a very compact little area, and while the roads tend to be a little slower than in many parts of the country, they are mostly scenic byways in their own right and an integral part of any visit to this neck of the woods. Your plan to make a circuit from Hartford and including Mystic, Bar Harbor and Vermont can be done in five days, but you'll have to cover some ground each and every day, particularly in getting from Mystic to Bar Harbor, and then from Bar Harbor to Vermont. I have previously gathered up some great discussions of New England venues, and I encourage you to go have a read through them. Then if you have any questions come on back and we'll do our best to answer them.

We stayed in a motel/cabin combo near Bar Harbor, ME called Isleview Motel and Cottages back in summer 2012. The people who run the place are very kind and accommodating, and our cabin was clean as a whistle. It was a bit small, and a little "old fashioned", but serviceable, and the price was right! We had a refrigerator and small microwave in the cottage, and a bathroom. The weirdest thing was that it didn't seem perfectly level. When we commented on that, we were told that it was caused by the winters they have. I guess every spring, the owners have to don carpentry gear and work on the cabins' foundations. It wouldn't keep me from staying there again. Outside, there were Adirondack chairs to sit in (if you take mosquito repellant), a barbecue grill to use, and a couple of picnic tables. It's not IN Bar Harbor, but on the way in. There's a couple of places to eat nearby if you don't mind a short walk or a slightly longer drive -- due to lack of space in our room and the fact that my husband LOVES lobster, we didn't try to eat in the room except for snacks.

If you can, drive US-1 up the coast to Bar Harbor. Lovely, lovely drive, especially around Penobscot Bay!

Thanks so much for the information. We decided to skip Vermont and concentrate on Connecticut, New Hampshire and Maine. The discussions of New England were helpful...I have to look for a B&B near Mystic and I should be done.
