Canada/New England/Niagara Falls Trip

My husband and I are trying to plan a week (flexible) long trip before his upcoming deployment. We are originally from Baltimore and would love to do something north from there. We can fly or drive, but are mainly looking for some fun destinations that include sightseeing, skiing, maybe some trails, and any other adventurous or romantic destinations. I would love any insight to the best spots in these areas to visit (and maybe a time frame needed to fit it all in), or even other suggestions for locations that you think would fit our interests. From Niagara Falls you could pick up I-90 to I-81 north to Watertown, NY. There, you could pick up New York 3 which would take you through the Adirondacks to Lake Saranac where you could pick up Route 86 to Lake Placid. This is a beautiful drive and you could perhaps get in some skiing at Lake Placid.

North of Lake Placid, The Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway is a great drive and you could get in some hiking (or take an elevator) to the summit of the mountain.

Well, as a former Maine-iac, I'm a bit prejudiced, but I would say that New England should fit your bill. You can get there relatively easily in a day's drive from Baltimore by heading north on I-83, picking up I-81 in Harrisburg, and I-84 in the Scranton area. That allows you to avoid the traffic and other headaches of I-95 and New York City. As for what to see and do in New England, there is no end to the possibilities and a week or so will let you sample quite a lot of them. Remember that New England is a rather compact area for as much variety as it offers. You can even get to Montréal as a relatively comfortable day trip from Burlington VT, and could include a swing by Niagara Falls or the Adirondacks if you were to take a couple of days for the drive back to Baltimore.
