90 days road trip in the US + 7 days in Mexico

Unfortunately it is not possible to take an extra vacation in Mexico after staying 90 days in the US...

Could you spend 83 days in the US and 7 in Mexico? Or, as Michael suggested, could you start with Mexico? If that is allowed?
