We've tried that on several occasions, but have never succeeded. So many bases have their lodges full with active duty on PCS orders. We generally try reservations for weeks ahead of time, and keep calling back, and still have no luck. Hopefully others have better luck than we have.

True, there doesnt seem to be very many posts along the route though. We are going to camp in Flagstaff at KOA site.

I really like the journal idea. I didn't think of that! They both have cool journals they could use already. Thank you!! We will try to make a point to see a sunrise/set. The emergency days. Im going to leave those. I know how exhausted we are when we get home from a trip and it will be nice to relax a minute when we get back if possible.

We are going to camp in Flagstaff at the KOA site! Its a LOT cheaper and more one with nature. Just what we like. and then when we go up north we will get a hotel with a pool or something. I figure thats a good compromise. It will be nice if we get there at the site before dark (fingers crossed)

I will tell you that many here, including myself, are not real big fans of KOA campsites, especially if you're tent camping.

They tend to be quite expensive relatively speaking, more RV focused, and rarely "one with nature." If you are looking for a place with resort-style amenities, like pools and arcades, they can work, but if you're looking to save money and enjoy nature, their are often better choices.

Having said that, I don't know anything about the specific location in Flagstaff, it may be perfectly fine, but I would also make sure you look at some of your options in the National Forests that surround the Flagstaff area. Also, just in general, I would keep National Forests in mind as they tend to be much more pet friendly than National Parks.

Oh WOW Michael I did not know that about KOA. Granted it is an opinion but none the less one to take into consideration. I just googled camp sites in and around the area and this was the one that popped up with availability. They also offered a military discount. We already made reservations but next time i will try to opt for something else.

9 times out of 10, a reservation is cancel-able. Check KOA's cancellation policies.

Personally, I'm with the others who say that KOA's aren't really made for tent campers. They're designed mostly for folks with motorhomes (MH), travel trailers (TT) and fifth wheels (5W) that want full hookups, shower facilities, and resort-type amenities. Most KOA's have a small plot of grass or dirt for the tenter, if you're lucky. (My dad is a former KOA owner.)

You can look for the national forest campgrounds. They typically will not have shower facilities, though there will be restroom facilities of some sort, access to water near your site, and the sites are usually flat. They'll also be lots cheaper!

My parents used to stay at Black Bart's whenever they had their TT out. They loved going into the steakhouse to enjoy the food and a show, which was primarily done by students at Coconino College and Northern AZ Univ. However, I'm not sure if they had tent sites, and Mom said she doesn't remember.
