Driving to Death Valley from Los Angeles. Where is a decent yet inexpensive place fairly close to the Death Valley National Park to stay?

You could try Beatty or Ridgecrest. Both have budget accommodation. I have stayed in both, though some years ago. Can't remember at which establishments.

Actually,

I really like the motel at Stovepipe Wells for relatively inexpensive lodging. Very nice bar and restaurant too.
