Birthday Road Trip from Atlanta to Washington D.C. Please help!

My boyfriend and I both have birthdays at the end of this month. We are planning a road trip from Atlanta to Washington D.C. Neither of us has ever been to South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, or D.C. We have seven days to be adventurous but I don't have a clue what to do. If anyone could give me some ideas where to stop along the way or what might be fun to do in these states I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!!

There are already several sources here for ideas of things to do on such a trip, so let me just direct you to a few of them to get you started. First, there is this description of a couple of routes along the east coast. Then there are these lists of 26 or so attractions in each of the states you will be driving through. Finally, if you use the RoadTrip America mapping software you will be shown an ever increasing number of sites within side trip distance of your route. If those don't give you enough ideas, fell free to ask specific question about places that would meet your particular interests. But those should certainly give you a good start.
