First road trip ever: NYC to Williamsburg Virginia

First trip ever and aiming far but not too far.
I have a week and was planning on leaving the city early Friday morning (May)
And wanted to know how many hours it takes to get to Williamsburg.
Is it doable in a day?
(I'm renting a car for 2 weeks.)
I plan on spending a good week at Williamsburg so any suggestions to sites to see would be appreciated
Coming back I would like to make a couple of stops, I'm in no rush coming back, it's getting there on Friday that I must do.
What's the best straight route driving to VA.
What's the bet route coming back to NYC w some great pit stop- restaurants, museums, scene

It's about 400 miles from NYC to Williamsburg via Interstates, and depending on traffic, this can be done in one day, figure about 8 hours.

Take the NJ Turnpike to the Delaware Memorial Bridge, then I-95 through Baltimore, go around DC on the 495 Beltway (listen for traffic reports to find out which way around is best), I-95 to north of Richmond, I-295 to I-64 to Williamsburg. See if you can rent an EZ-Pass with the car, it will make paying tolls a lot more convenient.

Any alternate route you want to take back to sightsee and make some stops would make it advisable to spend at least 2 days doing it. You could go down to Norfolk and take the Bay Bridge/Tunnel to the Delmarva peninsula and come up through Chincoteague/Assateague/Ocean City - then take the ferry from Lewes to Cape May and come home on the Garden State Parkway. Or, you could go back towards DC and take 301 through Annapolis. There are quite a few options.
