Another commentary on the Alaska dilemma:

If I had a chance to do that trip again, I WOULD. But if I had limited time, I would fly up there, rent either a car or an RV, and then tool around that way. When we were up there, a few years back, we saw the Fairbanks area, spent lots of time in Denali, spent more time in Anchorage, tooled down to Seward and did one of the tour boats into the bay, went over to Valdez to see that port and area. All were well worth doing! I'd do them all again, PLUS I'd go down to Homer and try to spend more time in the Wrangell-St Elias area.

We drove up AND down the highway back then. We didn't go down to Haynes, and if I were to do this trip again, I would make sure I did. I might also spend more time in the Kluane area of BC.

Default Alaska is not a dilemna.

May I suggest that you put Alaska right up at, or near the top of your list. It is a long trip, but can be done in easy days driving. And many of the places along the way have much of interest - especially hiking - if you want to spend more than a night there.

Driving the Alaska Highway is a life changing experience, when you think of how you come to be able to drive there. The history of the Alcan is built into every mile. Those who are conscious of it, will never view a road the same way again.

Next year it will (hopefully) be my third time, though each time there have been slight variations. As mentioned above, there are so many places to visit and see, in so many ways. Each with its unique attraction. But for me, Prudhoe Bay is at the top of the list, for next year.
