  1. Default San Francisco to Olympia on HWY 101

    Hey All,
I'm planning a road trip from San Francisco to Olympia, WA on HWY 101/1.
I would like to not have to stay in hotels on the way up, are there good places to camp or sleep in the car on the way up?
Also are there any issues I may encounter?

    Default Lots of camping spots.

Hi, and Welcome to the Great American RoadTrip Forum.

Highway 101 is a great choice and you will pass through or near a variety of State Forests and Parks, most of which have camping facilities. One which readily comes to mind is Humboldt Redwoods SP. There are State Parks north of Leggett and along the coast to Crescent City. And that is just for California alone. Oregon and Washington have similar facilities. Any good (paper) map will show these.

Please do not consider sleeping in your car unless you have a proper mattress and sleeping bag, etc. When on a multi day trip, you will need a good night's sleep to face the challenges of the next day. This is something you will not be able to get sleeping in a car. And pulling over on the side of the road, or in a rest area is not only unwise, it can get you into trouble with the law, and is far from safe.
