pittsburgh to portland: great stops on the way?

i'm packing up my single life and driving my mazda protege west to portland.

i'm hoping for some good advice on any of the following:
really cheesey touristy spots
beajutiful nature spots
fun and different hotels
neat places to eat

I drove from portland to pittsburgh 3 years ago on 90 from wyoming across and saw all the usual tourist attractions and major cities.

i'm looking for some different spots this year. i've considered southern canada, does anyone have thoughts on that?

I'm considering starting out where I've never been:Niagara Falls and go to Mackinac Island

That's a lovely trip, but you will find that it will probably be slower and almost certainly more expensive.
