  1. Default Travelling from PEI, Canada to New York...

Hi, A group of friends and I are planning on travelling from PEI, Canada to New York City. I have travelled to Maine in the past and we plan on stopping in Maine for a night and then continue on our travels. We want to do some sightseeing and are looking into any concerts or events that may be going on. We all have different interests so are wondering what are some good locations to stop at on the way. We were planning for a 10 day trip and will be driving the entire distance.

Also wondering what are the best routes to take? We were hoping to try and stay on the smaller roads as it would give us more of a chance to stop when we like as opposed to travelling on 4 lane highways the entire time and getting lost by taking exits.

Any information would be great..whether its locations to check out, routes to take, bridges we will cross, tolls, etc..

Thanks in advance and looking forward to making our trip your way in August!

    Default Welcome!

Welcome to the RoadTrip America Forum!

It's difficult to say what bridges you will cross since there are thousands of them in New England, and tolls depend on your planned route. There are some bridges off of the Interstates that have tolls.

If you're concerned about getting lost off of Interstate exits, aren't you concerned about getting lost on the two lanes?

There are various jazz festivals, clam bakes, and other outdoor events during August every year. There must be some common interests among your fellow travelers - some information about these would be beneficial.

Would you be more interested in a coastal route, or one that takes you inland?

    Thanks for the reply.

We are concerned about getting lost in spots, but thought it might be easier to find our way back if we aren't getting off at different exits..lol. But are open to any ideas or thoughts some might have for our travels.

We all want to see some waterfalls, mountains, beaches and such. Im not a huge fan of huge bridges, having to cross them that is and will travel the extra time to avoid any that are really long lol. Sounds funny but the Confederation Bridge is long enough for me.

We have plans to visit Fenway Park and want to check out Salem when we are in the area. We were hoping to make a few stops along the way and I looked into some places that have rock climbing and stuff like that. We're hoping to travel along some coasts but enjoy travelling thru the back roads as well.

I really would love to find some smaller cities with old historic buildings and homes, places where we could park the car and take a walk. Any suggestions on travel routes and destinations to check out would be great. We really enjoy anything outdoors at all.

    Default Almost an Either/Or

If you want to get from PEI to NYC in only two days, then you're going to have to do some serious driving, especially if you want to wander off the Interstates and make stops at scenic locations for some short stops. The obvious (and really the only) choice is to leave the Trans Canada about 20 miles west of Moncton and take NB-1 down to St. Stephen/Calais and then follow US-1 along the coast to Portland. This is your opportunity to see beaches and such. There's a unique reversing falls in St. John. Mountains will be in short supply on a coastal trip - Cadillac 'Mountain' is only some 450 meters high. But a great walking/history/scenery side trip would be to use ME-32 south from Waldoboro to Pemaquid Point, Lighthouse Park and Colonial Pemaquid, and then head back up to US-1 at Damariscotta via ME-130/ME-129.

After Portland, You're really going to have to boogie, and you'll also have to cut overland from around the NH/MA state line to NYC rather than follow the coast. Both of those constraints argue for just sticking to the Interstates: I-95/I-495/I-290/I-90/I-84/I-684.

And you will see nothing on this route that even begins to approach the height or length of the Confederation Bridge. Relax.

Thanks for the info. I may have placed this post in the wrong subject, we actually have 10 - 14 days travel time to be away, were just going to try and do it all over 10 days as opposed to the full two weeks. But we are open to anything really when it comes to which areas to check out and which ones we can sort of overlook.

Default Correct Me if I'm Wrong

But I read that as meaning that they have 10 days from PEI to PEI, spending one night in Maine on the way to New York. Thus: 2 days to drive to New York, 6 days in New York, and 2 days to drive home. No?

Lol well thank you both and I guess I'm at fault for my writing skills..We have 14 days in total to travel, however, we plan on just spending ten taking us around and about from PEI to NY, and heading towards PEI on the 10th day. We don't have to spend all of our time in NY, but it is a definite spot on our list of places to go. We have heard so many wonderful things about Boston and New Hampshire..

Also I very much appreciate all of your advice, I found this forum by chance so Im happy to hear any thoughts or advice!
