Eastern PA to New Orleans-Looking for suggestions for great backroads and 2-lane hwys

Hi all,

Myself and 4 friends are driving down to New Orleans tomorrow and after looking through the directions from google, I unfortunately found that we are kept on Interstates the entire drive. This is TERRIBLE! The whole reason we are driving down is to really see the American South. We are really interested in roadside attractions, the more off-beat the better (worlds biggest _____). Also, I would love a good BBQ and sweet tea suggestion. If anyone knows a backroad or two lane highway that would be a great drive down, I would very much appreciate it. As of right now our route takes us south from PA on I-81, through Maryland and western Virginia (read: not WV), through Knoxville and Chattanooga, then South on I-59 through Alabama and Mississippi all the way to NOLA.

How many days are you planning on for the drive? Allentown to NOLA via Interstates is 2 long days with an overnight in Knoxville. If you don't have at least 1 more day, I would not get off the Interstates.
