    Default California Road Trip

    Hi,
I am from Germany and two friends of mine and I are planning to do a road trip in California starting from Los Angeles. The trip lasts two weeks in September. We have not yet fixed the exact route or destinations we want to visit. Some ideas: Pacific coast from LA to San Francisco, National Parks (Yosemite, Sequoia, maybe Zion (Utah)), Lake Tahoe.
The main point is we want to spend a maximum of 2000$ each. In case we get a flight for 1000$, we have 1000$ left for two weeks. So ahead of all, the first question is whether a two week road trip is feasible.
I already checked some motel/hotel prices, budget class should be around 50$-75$ for a two double bed room. Maybe we can also camp at or in National Parks, however I have read it is hard to get a camp spot.
Next thing is car rentel. I read the sticky thread about high taxes and additional fees. However we prefer to rent a premium class car (or maybe a convertible), as we plan to drive about 1500 - 2000 miles. Another option would be to buy a fly&drive ticket which combines flight and car rental.

I just wanted to hear your opinion, especially if you think it is realistic. If you have further ideas for spots to see or explore, tell us.

    bye,
    fezboa

    Default Comparisons.

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

With the fly drive option you really need to look at what deals are around and see how costs compare with doing it for yourself. I am sure you would be comfortable enough in a standard Sedan and a premium will only put a strain on your budget. Three people and their luggage in a convertible ? You would have to travel extremely light.

You can get Motel rooms for the prices you mention but don't expect to get them in the National parks or City centre for that kind of money. Camping in the National parks is possible and you might have luck in September for vacant sites, but the only way to guarantee one is to book in advance. Mmm, wouldn't fancy getting camping gear in that convertible as well !

Have a look at this thread for some great idea's in the area and take a look around the RTA site where you will find tons of info.
