  1. Default Towing a trailer from Atlanta to Lincoln, NE--safest towing route?

    Hello, all!

I am relocating to Lincoln, NE from the Atlanta, GA area, and I would be grateful for any advice you could offer me regarding the safest route to take while towing a trailer behind a small SUV! I want to avoid steep inclines and sharp turns (and other troubling things we haven't considered!), if possible. I will be sharing the driving responsibility with someone who has towed a trailer in the past, but we don't have advanced experience in towing. Do you have any suggestions for us?

    Thank you!

    Default Straight as Possible

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!

There is actually a set of highways in the United States that were designed and built specifically to allow heavy trucks (military vehicles, actually) to travel at high, safe speeds while traversing all the various terrains of the country. Although we know it as them as Interstate Highways, their full name is the "Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways". Those roads are built to specifications that limit their grade (to less than 6%), their radius of curvature (sharpness of curves), even their change in grade so that you don't lose sight of traffic ahead as you crest a hill. Sticking to them is by far your safest and best bet. In your case, that would entail taking I-24 up into southern Illinois, then I-57 up to Mount Vernon and I-64 to St. Louis. While you could take I-64/I-70 directly throu8ght he heart of St. Louis, you'd probably be better off taking I-255/I-270 around the east and north sides of the city. At Kansas City, use I-435 around the city to I-29 north. Then at Nebraska City, you'd use IA-2/NE-2 to get to Lincoln. Although that last bit isn't Interstate, it is a well known and traveled connector between I-29 and I-80 (at Lincoln) and is as flat and straight as any road out there.
