  1. Default From New Orleans to...

My wife and I are planning a road trip from New Orleans in the summer, I have a convention to attend in July 15 and we wanted to make a roundtrip road trip from here, we were thinking on go from here to Virginia Beach VA, but I have concerns about security (taking a road that put us in the wrong place at the wrong time). Where were thinking like go from NO to Atlanta, then to Charlotte, then Raleigh, then Norfolk and Finally to Virginia beach and back to NO.

Do you guys think that it's crazy or complicated?
Do you have a plan B suggestion for a better roadtrip from NO?
    Any advice?

Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !

What are your security concerns ? Every place is someones home town where folks walk their kids to school and go to work. Sure there are less desirable neighbourhoods just about anywhere but you would normally have to search for them to put yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Stick to the instincts that kep you safe at home and if some place don't feel right, move on.

As for your road trip, it's a great idea ! Then again this is a road trip forum and it's what we love to do. If you need help with specifics then just ask, but you haven't mentioned anything of your interests or how long you have or anything else. :-)

My idea is to make the roadtrip in 5 to 7 days tops. I was thinking on roundtrip because of the cost of the car rental from take a car in one state and return it on other, so my questions are:

Is better to pay the fee at the car rental than take the roundtrip money wise (taking into account that I might arrive by air at VA, rent and deliver at NO or the opposite then leave from VA) ?
On the longest trip from NO to Atl, which you think is the best route?

There is no "best" route, but the quickest most efficient route from NO to ATL is I-10 to I-59 to Meridian, I-20 to Birmingham (taking I-459 around the city) then I-20. This drive can be made in 1 day, I'd recommend you stay in a hotel on the Interstate in the suburbs rather than downtown. Stay on the northeast side of the city so you won't be fighting morning rush hour traffic on your way out.

From ATL to VA Beach, take I-85 to US-58 to US-460 to I-264. This is a LONG day's drive.

    Default Just to clarify

Which airport in VA will you be flying into? and where will you be coming from?

Are the 5 - 7 days the round trip including the time at the convention? Or do you have 5 - 7 days to drive from NO to VA?

Do you want to fly into and out of the same city? which would save on the air fares and car rental.

So what might be your suggestions between ATL and VA, I mean hotel?

I have not decided yet on the airport if I choose VA first, what do you suggest?
The 5-7 days of the trip does not include the conference.
Regarding the third question, Im looking for the least expensive without affecting the experience.

Any hotel at any Interstate exit along I-85 should be fine.

    Default The least expensive.

The least expensive usually is to fly in and out of the same city and return the rental car to the place where you rented it.

Flying into and out of VA and driving to NOLA and back for the convention would be the most budget friendly..... that is if you cannot fly into and out of NOLA. Will you be coming in on a domestic or international flight?
