One of my favorite places in the world is Cave Creek in the Chiricahua Mountains. If you exit I-10 at Wilcox, Arixona and travel on route 186 you can visit the Chiricahua National Monument on the way -- than cross over the pass drive down to Portal. When reach the SW Research station, stop in and see if you can get someone to show you the red amethyst crystal cave -- it is one of the most amazing places you can imagine.Originally Posted by knorberg

... of off-the-beaten-path, here are three possibilities.
The Yuma Territorial Prison State Historic Park in Yuma, AZ. And you thought Gitmo was bad!
Kartchner Caverns State Park just south of Benson, AZ. A rare 'living' cave. Reservations recommended.
Alamo Village north of Brackettville, TX. A little far off I-10 and not the real thing, but an incredible simulation - built for the John Wayne version of history. You could then stop in San Antonio and compare it to the 'real' thing - or the Daughters of Texas version of history.
