Driving from Lake Tahoe to Las Vegas

We will be in Lake Tahoe (CA) for a wedding in early September. To recover, we plan to drive to Las Vegas for a couple of days :)
Has anyone done this drive? If not, any suggestions as to the most scenic and interesting route would be greatly appreciated. We don't need the most direct route.

I have only driven this route twice and both times time was a factor for me. Well, actually, I was going through Reno but, except for the beginning, it's the same thing. I simply took 95 all the way. It's about 485 miles and can be done in one long day. We really didn't take time for much sightseeing.

There are a lot of folks who frequent this forum who are far more familiar with this area. I'm confident they'll show up and give you good advice.

Graham, I have made this drive several times in recent years. I like the notion that you need to recover from the wedding -- sounds ominous! How fast do you want to reach Las Vegas? US-95 is a nice Nevada drive -- lots of historical sites along the way. On the other hand, you could use US-395 and travel the eastern edge of the Sierras or a combination of the two by crossing over at Death Valley or the Lida Cut-off. If you use Lida -- make sure you go to Bristlecone! It is just about perfect in September and make sure you do one of the short walks! Once you reach Las Vegas, (RTA's corporate home) here are some tips of what we enjoy about living here.
