  1. Default US Route 2 - information?

    Hey all, cool site!

I'm a traveler... It's what I do for a living. However, I'm usually working my way between major cities and take the interstate system. Luckily I don't have to do that this time...

I'm planning a trip from Republic, WA to Vermont (with a stop in Cleveland) at the end of January.

I'd like to take RT 2 over to the UP of MI and then down 75 to I-90 and on over to Vermont.

I'm searching high and low for some information about RT2. Possible road closures in MT, places to stay, neat towns to stop in.

I'll be moving right along (I have 5 days to get to Cleveland), but I'd like any information on this great route.

Does anyone know of a website or a book about touring RT2? I saw a great site about RT 6 but nothing for the northern route.

Thanks in advance, and happy motoring!

    Liam :-)

Default Even a Pro Will Find This Difficult

Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America forum.

With only 5 days to get to Cleveland from central Washington, I really don't think you have a lot of time to go meandering down 2-lane blacktop or stopping in neat towns. Even taking the Interstates will require about 36 hours of time actually behind the wheel and making miles. Realistically, that's 4 days. My best estimate of the time needed to follow your proposed route of US-2, I-75 and I-90 to Cleveland is 46 hours of driving time. That's just within the realm of possibility, but hardly what I would consider enjoyable. You can find a website that describes some of US-2's highlights here, and the Montana road conditions here.

I have to agree with buck, although from what it looks like on Streets and Trips, you might have to forgo US2 all together. From Republic: (WA 20 to US 395 into Spokane and I-90).

If you're planning a return trip from Vermont to Republic, I would definately plan on taking US 2 if you have no time requirements.

As has been mentioned previously, I think you may have short-changed your schedule a little. It is impossible to maintain interstate highway speeds for long on Route 2, especially in Winter -- there are two many small towns (and believe me, you don't want to contribute a daily basis to the local enforcement district's budgets).
Here is a great post with info about Route 2
All that said, it is a pretty route and one that I would like to take, end to end one day!

  5. Default Thank you

Thanks all. What a great site at roadtripsusa!

I've added another day, Leaving Sunday and hopefully getting to Cleveland on Thursday evening.

If it doesn't look like we're going to make it I guess we'll head down to I-94 and boogie along.

We're not interested in stopping at a bunch of places (a few along the way) given the amount of time we have, but it would be nice to take a route other then I-94 or 90.

Since I know I've made Chicago to Seattle in 2.5 days (with multiple drivers) I'm confident I can make this in 5. We just have to hope for good weather!

    Thanks all! Safe travels!
