  1. Default San fran - Vegas - Yellowstone - San Fran

Hi, My partner and I are planning a 3 week trip in January and would be grateful for any advice you can supply. We are planning to fly from the Uk to San Fran and visit yosemite ect on the way to Vegas where we plan to marry and then visit Grand Canyon and travel up to Yellowstone. Which is the best route to take? We would also like to know what anyone would recommend on how to get from Yellowstone back to San Fran. Would all this be possible in 3 weeks? Kind Regards Linda and Anthony

I would think you should have time to do the schedule you have. I know you can travel from San Francisco to Las Vegas in a day (a long day, but still a day). I would go on to yahoo and look up directions from the mapping section. At a quick glance it's about 1000 miles from SF to Yellowstone and about 800 miles from Yellowstone to Las Vegas.

A word of warning about Yellowstone in Fall, we went there last year and depending on which entrance to go in, some are closed during specific times of day, so double check which entrance you'd be coming in before planning, or at least make sure it's open. We barely caught the two hour window they had to go in.

    Good luck.

Congratulations on the pending marriage. Las Vegas is a great place to marry. If you need some suggestions about where and how, this article might be of help. Also we reviewed a pretty useful guide on this subject here.

There is one challenge about trying to visit Yosemite NP on the way to Las Vegas. The mountain pass on the east side of the park will be closed due to snow. There are some superb posts about the various alternative passes you can use -- look at the threads that discuss San Francisco to Las Vegas below. It is impossible to visit Yosemite (in the winter) from a start point in San Francisco and still make Las Vegas that night. During the summer months one can do it in about 10 hours as the Editor has done a couple of times. But in January, you will need to make it a two day trip.

There is limited access to Yellowstone in January Read more about Winter Activities.

As mentioned, Tioga Pass thru Yosemite to Las Vegas will be closed for the winter. Three weeks should be plenty of time. Keep in mind that it snows in many of the areas you plan to visit so you might have to change plans on a moments notice!
