The subadult males are sunbathing and hanging out at the coves south of Piedras Blancas (elephant seal lions). This colony has about 12,000 members, although only the teenagers will be on the beach right now. For the best tips on cheap lodging and dining -- check out this guidebook. One of the best sources for information about these amazing animals can be found on this site.

    Default Santa Maria BBQ

Between San Luis Obispo and Solvang, you'll be in Santa Maria style
    barbecue country.

It's been a while since I've eaten there, but the Old Country Deli
in San Luis Obispo has a BBQ grill fired up in their parking lot.
It's on the corner of Marsh and Nipomo.

Get off of 101 at Marsh and drive a couple of blocks east to Nipomo.

    Old Country Deli
    600 Marsh St
    San Luis Obispo, CA 93401-3931
    (805) 541-2968

There are other well known BBQ restaurants in the area, but the
    deli is probably the cheapest.

I recall the Far Western Tavern in Guadalupe made a tasty
tri-tip sandwich. Can't remember the prices though.

You'll be in wine country as well. There are lots of wineries in
the Santa Ynez Valley near Solvang.

If camping is your bag, there are some seaside campgrounds.
Check out Gaviota, Refugio, and El Capitan Beaches, you may need
    reservation though.
