Driving from CA to NY HELP!! 1st time

My friend and I are taking a road trip from SF CA to somewhere in NEW YORK. We both have never been to NY before, let alone drove this far, with so many stops. Please help with any tips on saving money, suggestions on rental cars, any thing.

So many stops? What route are you planning on using? Time frame? Interests? There are hundreds of route suggestions for such an epic trip on this site.
