One-way-rentals --> How can we save money???
Hi Folks!
We're from Germany and we are coming to the US each summer since 8 years in a row.
Our favourite destinations (this far) are the West/South West.
We feel a little limited in our travelling area due to the expensive cost for one-way car rentals. As far as we have experienced, only "within a state"-rentals are with no extra cost, as well as a few routes between the states (e.g. California/Nevada, Washington/California).
As I wrote in a different thread, we are planning a trip, starting in Houston/TX, going to Las Vegas/NV or Denver/CO.
The best offer, we read of this far, is an offer from National Rent-a-Car, where the cost for one-way rentals is limited to US$ 199, which seems to be quite reasonable, compared with other major companies (Alamo, Avis ..).
What are your tips or recommendations?
Thanks a lot!
Regards
Frank

Frank,
I cant vouch for this from personal experience but I have been told that the best way to get a good deal on one way rental is to telephone the offices of the car hire companies in your start city (Houston) directly. Speak to the manager in each one and ask what deal he can offer you for the one way rental you want. It is my understanding that the managers have to balance the numbers of vehicles they have and if you are lucky you will contact a manager who needs to 'lose' a car. In such cases he may discount the drop off fee.
If you do choose to try this, please let me know how you get on.
