TX to KS to Breckenridge to NM to TX -- HELP!!

We're going to be driving Dec. 25/26/27 from Texas up Interstate to Salina, KS then heading west to Denver and eventually Breckenridge, Colorado.

Coming home we thought it would be fun to go "the other way" Down to Santa Fe, NM and then east to Texas. This would be Dec 31/Jan 1. We will be stopping in NM to watch the Cotton Bowl (Texas A&M grads!!) since we can't physically make it to Dallas before 10 AM 1/1/05...

ALL TIPS, SUGGESTIONS, COMMENTS ARE APPRECIATED! We've never done this!! Also info on where to find road closures, road requirements (snow chains) are helpful.. ANYTHING is welcome. We will be driving an AWD SUV....
