It is fine
I-80 is used by thousands of drivers every single day -- winter or summer. You may well hit snow and other winter weather -- but it is not really that big a deal.
Even if you were to use one of the more southerly routes -- you would still hit winter weather, unless you were to go by way of Mexico, which would be a bit of detour.

Drive 2 CA
Hello, I drove from Sacramento to DC in August of 03 and utilized 80 to the Chicago area. 80 is a great route......in summer. I am driving back to Sac in January 05 and definitely will not take 80. The weather can be pretty nasty in the Ohio Valley, but nothing compared to what you could come across in the Western states, especially Wyoming and the mountains of Colorado, Utah, and the Sierra Nevada. I am taking the southern route when I go home. I will do most of my driving on 40, through Ark, OK, panhandle of TX, northern NM and AZ, into the desert of CA. You should choose what is best for you---I will be with my four kids so I dont wanna chance the northern route. Good Luck !! Why are you going to SJ??

DRIVE
By the way, the high plains of Wyoming can be very dangerous in large winter storms--when I went thru in August of 03, I noticed gates on the road to be closed in winter storms.

I-40
Yes, I agree, I think I-40 would be better. I've just been there and it was fine. Of course, nasty weather is everywhere at this time of the year, but I'd rather take I-40, I'm sure there's less snow in Oklahoma, Texas, NM and Arizona right now than in Wyoming and Nebraska on I-80. Plus, winter in the Great Lakes area is pretty rough, lots of snow, humidity, very windy and cold. But on the other hand I-80 is also a big interstate so it's probably very well maintained...
