LA to San Fran

A friend and I are planning on driving from LA to San Francisco in one day. We'd like to see some of the spectacular CA coastline, but don't relish the idea of being on the road for 12 hours. We were thinking of taking the interstate part of the way, and crossing over to the coast for a time. Any suggestions?

In your situation, I'd drive north on I-5 to SR58 (near Bakersfield) and take that over to the coast highway via San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. Drive SR1 at least to Salinas, then if you are in a hurry, use US101 the rest of the way to San Francisco. San Luis Obispo is a neat little college town, and Morro Bay is spectacular (as is most of the rest of the drive as you probably already know)! Bob
