Default Best Directions from New York to Las Vegs

    Hi All:
could somebody tell me the best route to take to go to Vegas during the winter months and the best places to stay along the way that are safe? Any good things to see along the way would be great help.
    Thanks,
    Dawn

    Default What kind of danger?

What kind of danger are you anticipating? Just about any place can be either "safe" or "dangerous". Best Route? Depends on what you are interested in seeing. I-70 is a good compromise between incredible scenery and speed.

Thanks for responding Mark. I just wanted to ask about being safe. Is it safe to stay at motels right off the interstate or are those more apt for the cars to be robbed?

Where do I get Interstate 70?

do you know where I could get the best directions using that route?
    Thanks,

    Default Some guidelines

Getting robbed at motel parking lots is relatively rare -- after literally thousands of roadtripping miles over the last several years, I have never seen it happen. Getting robbed anywhere is more about the behavior of the victim than anything else. For some additional tips in that regard, you might want to look at our tips for Solo roadtrippers: http://www.roadtripamerica.com/tips/solo.htm

Also, you might want to view the postings in the "Where to Stay" thread in this section.

I-78 is the direct connector to I-70 from New York (actually Newark, NJ).

The on-line mapping service we use is mapblast.com. We suggest that you click on the "directions" tab -- that allows you to enter starting and destination locations and the program will generate an excellent map and driving directions.

Paper maps are also fairly useful. We provide information about some of our favorites at: http://www.roadtripamerica.com/maps/maps.htm

    Have a fun drive!

I'm assuming that you will be doing the bulk of your driving during the daylight hours, and that you probably won't be exiting the highways unless there are some sort of amenities or services. If this is the case, you have little to worry about in terms of safety along I-70. As far as car break-ins, I have also never heard of that kind of thing happening at a motel.

    Default My two cents

Most hotels that are in any sort of urban setting, especially areas that have a higher crime rate have security or a security camera in the parking lot. If you are travelling and worried about safety I would be more worried about your car breaking down or blowing a tire or something along those lines. If that is your concern make sure you get your car in for a check up and make sure you have the propber air in your tires. When I travell, no matter what time of year, I always pack an extra blanket, socks, food, and gear that I may need incase some thing were to happen. I think I would just plan accordinly and you will be fine. The trip should be fun. Don't worry to much... don't forget to check your oil and you spare...

    Default STAYING SAFE

DAWN DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING IN VIEW IN YOUR CAR (NOTHING) I WAS BROKEN INTO AND A T SHIRT WAS REMOVED FROM THE BACK SEAT IT COST ME A SIDE WINDOW. MY WIFE AND I WITH 5 CHILDREN HAVE TRAVELED THROUGH MANY CITIES AND OTHER SO CALLED HOT SPOTS FOR CRIME WE STAYED OUT OF PLACES WHERE THERE WAS AN APPARENT DISRESPECT FOR THE ENVIORNMENT. WE HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS FEELING SAFE. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR TRIP.
